The State aims to highlight the arbitrary and fabricated concept of borders, derived from the abstract ideals of common heritage: whether religious, racial or political. Their existence is both deliberate and in a constant state of flux, oft prescribed post conflict as a punitive measure levied against the losers, or as an instrument of control to subjugate citizens and to remove aspects of free movement.

With the rapid pace of globalisation and its impact on geopolitics, the strengthening of international border controls has intensified. Extolling insidious, authoritarian and elitist interpretations of the right-of-entry, governments have attempted to strengthen the exclusivity of the state. This is driven in-part by the global threat of terrorism, mass migration, human trafficking and smuggling, and so-called illegal immigration [ a term which in actuality often obscures the legitimate seeking of asylum, due to conflict or climate change, and is disseminated widely as a form of propaganda ]. In cases of a disputed or unclear border, erecting a barrier can serve as a de facto unilateral consolidation of a territorial claim that can supplant formal delimitation.

The State’s border is marked by an enclosed barrier system [ an interpretation of airport passport control ], which is heavily monitored and controlled by illuminated signage, and yet, it is impossible to enter or leave. A defined border within an already highly secured area of transit. The ultimate utopia perhaps, as it contains no one, has no identity and exists purely as a representation of a state. It does not establish notions of belonging, stateliness or national identity. It is the consequence of a complete disdain for humankind, with notions of community, fellowship and inclusivity being deposed by those of control, division, eugenic and elitist idealism's and the resultant otherness of all.
